Gary Mathews Sr, affectionately known as Sarge, played MLB baseball for 16 years in the 70's and 80's. Sarge played his brand of all-out, enthusiastic ball for the San Franciso Giants, the Atlanta Braves, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs and the Seattle Mariners. He was Rookie of the Year in 1973 for the Giants, batting 300 with 22 doubles, 10 triples, 12 homeruns and 17 stolen bases. As a Cub, he was voted the MVP of the 1983 NLCS when he hit three homers and collected 18 RBI's in four games, leading the Cubs past the Dodgers and into the World Series!

Gary had his best overalll season with the Braves in 1979, hitting 304, 27 homeruns and knocking in 90 RBI and earning a spot on the All-Star team. Sarge had wonderful career numbers, a .281 batting average, 2011 hits, 234 homeruns, 978 RBI's, 183 stolen bases and, with plate discipline, generated a .364 OBP with a high one year of 410. The numbers are grand but he was loved by fellow players and fans, alike for his passion.
